શામજી નાનપણ થી ભરાડી ભાઈબંધ ઘણા અને શામજી એનો હેડ. ભાઈબંધો ને ભેગા કરી ને પછી આંબલી પાડે, કોઈના ખેતર માંથી શિંગ ના પાથરા ઉપાડે, ગાંડા બાવળ માંથી હાંઘરા પાડે અને પછી ગામને ગોંદરે વડ નું ખૂબ મોટું જાડ એની નીચે બેસીને બધી વસ્તુના ઢગલા કરતા અને પછી શામજી ભાગ પાડે બધા ભાયબંધ ના ભાગ કરીને છેવટે એક વધારાનો ભાગ કરે. ભાઈબંધ પૂછે એલા શામજી આ કોનો ભાગ તો શામજી કહે  ‘આ ભાગ ભગવાનનો !’  અને પછી સૌ પોતપોતાનો ભાગ લઈને રમવા દોડી જતા. અને ભગવાનનો ભાગ ત્યાં મૂકી જતા. ભગવાન રાતે આવશે, છાનામાના પોતાનો ભાગ ખાઇ જશે એમ શામજી બધા ને સમજાવે.     બીજે દિવસે સવારે  વડલે જઈને જોતા તો  ભગવાન એનો ભાગ ખાઈ ગયા હોય બોરના ઠળીયા ત્યાં પડ્યા હોય અને પછી તો આ રોજની એમની રમત થઈ ગઈ અને આમ રમતા રમતા શામજી મોટો થયો ગામડે થી શહેર કમાવવા ગયો. બે હાથે ઘણું ય ભેગું કર્યું જેમ જેમ કમાણી વધતી ગઈ તેમ તેમ શામજી નો લોભ વધતો ગયો. ધન ભેગુ તો ઘણું કર્યું પણ શામજી પેલો ભગવાન નો ભાગ કાઢવાનું ભૂલી ગયો. લગ્ન કર્યા, છોકરા છૈયા ને પરણાવ્યા એના છોકરા છૈયા શામજી ઘર મા દરેક ની જરૂરિયાત પૂરી કરે જેને જે જોતું હોય તે લાવી આપે આ બધી

“કાકા, ચાલો, ટાઇમ પૂરો થઇ ગયો !”  બગીચાના ચોકીદારે અનિલરાયને ઢંઢોળીને કહ્યું. ઝપકી લઇ રહેલ અનિલરાય ઢીલા સાદે બબડ્યા:” હા, ભઈ, હવે તો મારો ટાઇમ પણ પૂરો થયો હોય તેવું લાગે છે.” અનિલરાયે આજુબાજુ નજર નાખી તો કલબલાટ કરતાં ભૂલકાંઓ અને ચોવટ કરતા વડીલો તો ક્યારનાય બગીચાની બહાર નીકળી ગયા હતા. એટલે અનિલરાય પણ ચંપલ પહેરી ઘેર જવા નીકળ્યા. રેલવેના કર્મચારી તરીકે નિવૃત્ત થયાને છ મહિના થઇ ગયા, પરંતુ જાણે કે અનિલરાય હજુ સુધી નિવૃત્તિ માટે તૈયાર નહોતા. વર્ષો સુધી ઝીણવટભરી ચીવટ અને સંપૂર્ણ સમર્પણની ભાવનાથી નોકરી કરતાં કરતાં અનિલરાય તે દોડભાગ અને ધમાલભરી જિંદગી સાથે એટલા ઓતપ્રોત થઇ ગયા હતા કે હવે નિવૃત્તિ પછીની કશું કર્યા વગરની જિંદગી તેમને અકળાવનારી લાગતી હતી.   દરરોજના નિત્યક્રમ મુજબ સવારે વહેલા ઉઠી જાય તો પત્ની નિર્મલાબેન છણકો કરીને કહેતાં: હવે તમારે ક્યાં ઓફીસ જવાનું છે, તે વહેલા ઉઠીને બાથરૂમ રોકીને બેસી જાઓ છો! આ છોકરાંઓને સ્કૂલ જવામાં મોડું થશે અને મુકેશ પણ બિચારો ક્યારે તૈયાર થશે! થોડીવાર શાંતિથી પથારીમાં પડ્યા રહોને! પરંતુ ઊંઘ ઉડી ગયા પછી અનિલરાયને પથારી ચટકા ભરતી. માંડમાંડ
